Donation Facts 1)
EVERY TWO SECONDS, SOMEONE NEEDS BLOOD. Every
minute patients use more than 36 units of blood. Every day
approximately 40,000 units of blood are used throughout the country.
Despite the urgent need for more donors, less then 5 percent of
healthy Americans actually donate each year. 2)
THE BLOOD SUPPLY NEEDS CONSTANT REPLENISHMENT. Every
day more people are diagnosed with illnesses such as Cancer, Leukemia
and Sickle Cell disease, all which utilized blood products for
treatment. In treating chronic disease and illness, many people may
require up to 200 units of blood. 3)
GIVING BLOOD HAS HEALTH BENEFITS. Each
donor receives a free mini-physical that checks for anemia, body
temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Donors also receive free
cholesterol screening results with every blood donation. 4)
INDIANA BLOOD CENTER PROVIDES BLOOD TO MORE THAN 60 HOSPITALS IN
INDIANA. On
a daily basis, over 1,000 units of blood are needed to meet the needs
of Indiana hospital patients. The Indiana Blood Center is a nonprofit
community service organization that has served as the major provider
of blood to Indiana hospitals since 1952. 5)
